The Bachelor of Theology (B.Th.) programme is considered an adequate academic qualification for the exercise of Pastoral Ministry in the Church. The course emphasizes an in-depth study of the Bible, Christian Faith, History of Christianity, and Religions, along with their missiological implications, especially in the context of a pluralistic world. The programme also includes practical training, providing students with opportunities for involvement in ministerial practice and exposure to diverse socio-cultural and religious situations. This is intended to foster the integration of theory and practice, leading to a holistic theological learning experience. The duration of the programme is three and a half to four years.

Admission Requirements for the B.Th. Degree Programme

The minimum requirements, as determined by the Senate of Serampore College (University), are as follows:

  1. The candidate must have completed 18 years of age.
  2. The candidate must have passed the 10+2 Higher Secondary Examination (12th standard / PUC / PDC with a total of 12 years of schooling starting from Standard I) or an equivalent programme recognized by the Government Education Department.
    • Equivalent programmes include Diploma courses of a minimum two-year duration after completing 10th standard, such as ITI, Nursing, Hotel Management, etc. OR
  3. The candidate must have passed 10th standard, completed two years of further study in a theological or secular institution, and possess experience in Christian ministry or public service.

B.Th. to B.D. Upgrade (Two-Year B.D. Degree Programme)

  • A candidate who has successfully completed the B.Th. degree programme with BOS 11 and BOS 12 is eligible to join the two-year B.D. degree programme (Upgrader).
  • BOS 11 and BOS 12 may be exempted if the candidate has passed the Class XII examination with English as a compulsory subject, including those from vernacular-medium boards.

Mature Candidates

A mature candidate is one who:

  1. Has attained 25 years of age
  2. Has a minimum qualification of 10th standard
  3. Has three years of ministerial experience
  4. Has passed the Mature Candidate Entrance Examination conducted by the Senate of Serampore College

Such candidates shall be admitted to the first year of the third-year B.Th. degree programme. The Mature Candidate Entrance Examination is conducted twice a year, during October/November and March/April.

Dip. C.S. to B.Th. Upgrade

  • A candidate who has passed Diploma in Christian Studies (Dip. C.S.) with Qualifying English papers BOS 11 and BOS 12 shall be enrolled in the second year of the three-year B.Th. degree programme.
  • BOS 11 and BOS 12 may be exempted if the candidate has passed the Class XII examination with English as a compulsory subject, including vernacular-medium boards.

Dip. B.T. to B.Th. Upgrade

  • A candidate who has passed Diploma in Biblical Theology (Dip. B.T.) with Qualifying English papers BOS 11 and BOS 12 shall be enrolled in the second year of the three-year B.Th. degree programme.
  • BOS 11 and BOS 12 may be exempted if the candidate has passed the Class XII examination with English as a compulsory subject, including vernacular-medium boards.
